April 01, 1912 Dear Ruth: I received your letter this morning so I half expected an April Fool but didn't get it so I was fooled. I have had quite a time since I wrote to you last so I guess I will begin by telling you about it. Friday morning a fellow called me up and asked me if I would play Basket Ball with the town team against the Bon Ton limits. that night. I told him no but he came over and finally talked me into it. Jimmy White also got roped in. The game was at Fairbury Ill. I couldn't go with the bunch because of classes so I went later in the afternoon. I had to change cars 3 times to get there and made awful poor connections. I got there at 8:30 but they were still waiting for me. We played in an old opera house and it was just packed also a good deal of money was put up on the game so there was a lot of enthusiasm and it was all against us even the referee. We beat them though 24-13- I got just half of our points as I came in for a lot of talk from the spectators. Three or four times the game nearly broke up because of fights but the policeman managed to keep order however he arrested on of our men. Had a dance afterward and danced until 12 oclock. James White and I were the only two who had Saturday classes so we were the only ones to come back that night. We had an exam and just had to go back. There was no passenger train so we flipped a freight train that went through at 1:30 got into an open car and oh: but it was cold. Had to get off 3/4 of a mile from Forrest. We walked to Forrest and caught a 2:30 train for Monticello then caught a 6:06 interurban for Champaign. Went to my exam at eight o'clock and took my make up exam at 10:00 AM. Passed it too. Saturday night I slept 11 1/2 hours. I played under Ed Custs name because I didn't want them to know who I was. No more of that in mine though. I am still so tired I can't see straight. Didn't even get all my expenses paid. Last week Illinois cleaned up on both the track and aquatic championships. Pretty good yes? The last Al heard Nellie was greatly improved. I hope they don't blame it all on the Lake water. What will I do? As for riding that horse double I feel quite hurt to find that you think more of the horse's feelings than of mine. Yesterday was grand day actually hot but today it is cold disagreeable and rainy. I hope I have nice weather for my vacation. Today is your first day of vacation. Hope it is nice there. We are having a regular fall rain storm. I only have a day and half more of school now so it isn't so bad. I expect to see you Wednesday night so I will say good bye until then. Ever yours. Homer.
